Donor Match Guide

Each drive brand has different criteria when you are looking for a donor.
In the list bellow you will find the matching criteria for each drive family.

This criteria do not guarantee a 100% compatible donor but increase the chances of compatibility almong the disk drives.

In order you get the best donor and if the donors available do not match the full criteria, keep in mind the criteria priorities.

 

RED – High priority
BLUE – Medium priority
GREEN – Low priority

Seagate

Old Models (usually these drives contain a dot ( . ) in the firmware number.

 

Model number: Match the exact model number

Heads map: Match the number of physical heads. Usually there is no problem if the donor has more heads.

Serial number: Match the first three characters of the serial number.

Site code: Match the site code.

Part number: Match at least the 1st half of the part number. If the second half also matches,better.

Date code: Convert the date codes and try that the date on your disk and the donor should be within three months of each other.

Firmware: Matching the firmware it’s a plus.

F3 Models

Model number: Match the exact model number

Heads map: Match the number of physical heads. Usually there is no problem if the donor has more heads.

Serial number: Match the first three characters of the serial number.

Site code: Match the site code.

Part number: Match at least the 1st half of the part number. If the second half also matches,better.

Date code: Convert the date codes and try that the date on your disk and the donor should be within three months of each other.

Firmware: Matching the firmware it’s a plus.

Western Digital

Old Drives (Caviar version)

 

Model number: Match the first part of the model number and third, fourth and fifth characters in the second part.

Heads map: Match the number of physical heads. Usually there is no problem if the donor has more heads.

DCM: Find the J or 2 in the DCM. Make sure that the J or 2 as well as the character before matches.

Country of manufacture: Should be the same.

Date of manufacture: No more than a difference of three months

PCB Revision: Match PCB Revision.

Marvell

Model number: Match the first part of the model number and third, fourth and fifth characters in the second part.

Heads map: Match the map of physical heads. Usually there is no problem if the donor has more heads.

DCM: Find the J or 2 in the DCM. Make sure that the J or 2 as well as the character before matches.

Pre-Amp: Match the pre-amp vendor and revision

Country of manufacture: Should be the same.

Date of manufacture: No more than a difference of three months

Toshiba

Model number: Match the exact model number

Country of manufacture: Should be the same

Hard Drive Code: At least the first part should match.

Hitachi / IBM

Model number: Match the exact model number

Part number: Match the exact part number

MLC: Match the exact MLC

Date of manufacture: No more than a difference of three months

Fujitsu

Model number: Match the exact model number

Part number: Match the exact part number

Samsung

Old models

Model number: Match the exact model number

Country of manufacture: Should be the same

P/V: Should be the same

PCB Revision: Match PCB Revision.

New models

Mainly 2.5’’ drives and 3.5’’ drives starting on F3 series

Model number: Match the exact model number

Heads map: Match the map of physical heads. Usually there is no problem if the donor has more heads.

Pre-Amp: Match the pre-amp revision

Firmware: Matching the firmware it’s a plus.

Maxtor

Model number: Match the exact model number

Four-letter code: Match at least 1st and 3rd letters.  Even better if the four letters match.

Date of manufacture: No more than a difference of three months
